Music does not just live in the soul, Efo is music!

In the very center of Yerevan, the usual bustle of the working day reigns — everyone is busy with everyday affairs and, which is especially noticeable, with everyday thoughts. The office building radiates the chill of dark marble — hiding inside from the dining heat is a great idea! A very polite but strict man at the entrance carefully keeps silence.

— Are you in the  Efo drum studio? — a sincere smile appears on the face of a previously serious person — “To the 6th floor. Come in!»

Efo is known to everyone: in this building, in this city, what can we say — all over the world. It was he who accompanied in 2008, and in 2011 opened the Eurovision Song Contest in Armenia. In 2008, together with the Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia, singer Arman Hovhannisyan, he created Arman Hovhannisyan Production, together they toured the United States, Europe, Australia and Canada. In 2015, his author’s composition «Շուշի/Հաղթանակ» («Shushi/Victory») was released, which was performed at many concerts of different genres. In 2016, a bright collaboration with Karen Sevak began, which continues to this day. In 2022, Efo, together with the dance studio «Swag dance», released the video «Hay Fidayi». Efo gives the world the opportunity to see the culture of Armenia in a modern context, while maintaining a close connection with history.

We rise on an ordinary elevator, go along an ordinary corridor and approach, it seems, an ordinary door. Behind her, as expected in a dhol studio, a drum sounds. We wait just a couple of minutes for the end of the lesson and enter a small room flooded with light. We are met by a legendary man — Sergey Efo Khachatryan!

We start a conversation. It turned out to be a warm meeting with a person who really lives by his work! A 7-year-old beginner drummer came with us, he dreams of meeting Efo! And all the attention in the  Efo drum studio, first of all, to the students!

The main conversation takes place between the musicians, they understand each other without words, only rhythm. Efo, an accomplished professional, speaks so easily that there is no trace of the young drummer’s embarrassment at the moment. In this studio, the atmosphere of free creativity and strict adherence to the academic foundations of music easily coexist, painstaking work is diluted with moments of sincere laughter. Only a person who has not parted with dhol since childhood can organize the process in this way! Efo knows exactly what the learning process should be — Sergey Khachatryan created his own system, which is described in detail in the book “Դհոլի բանալի” (“The Key to Dhol”). But all in order!

— How did Efo and dhol meet? When did you first pick up a drum and how did it happen?

— There was always a dhol in our house and for the first time I took it in my hands at the age of 5. And my dad, Armenak Khachatryan, taught him how to hold it correctly. At the age of 6, he brought me to the ensemble “Զարդանախշեր” (“Zardanakhsher”), to the Center of Aesthetics in Yerevan. At that time, many dance groups were accompanied by musicians and they immediately took me. In 1993, Heinrich Igityan included me in a group to participate in the festival, which was held in St. Petersburg in the Peter and Paul Palace. For a month I was away from home and relatives, they treated me very carefully, like crystal. So that I would not get bored, they gave me a toy — a zoo, these are very vivid childhood memories. Since then, I have videos, photos, newspaper clippings — and everywhere I am inseparable from the dhol. I thank my father for organizing the shooting and preserving these memories. After my return, he said that I needed to study music and we went to audition at the music school named after Armen Tigranyan.

— So you began to seriously learn to play the dhol?

— So the serious study of music began! I was accepted into the piano department because there was simply no dhol department.

— What instruments, besides the dhol, does Efo play and why did the dhol become a matter of life?

— After the piano, I continued my studies on the Armenian wind instrument — shvi. After graduating from school, he entered the Yerevan State Conservatory named after Komitas in the class of folk instruments at the department of santur, playing the dhol at that time was not taught. However, all this time I participated in numerous festivals in Armenia and abroad, and invariably I had a dhol in my hands.

— How was the idea of creating a dhol using your own technology born and why is the Efo drum unique?

— The idea of creating Efo Dhol is the result of a search for a practical solution. Performances in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Canada involved long-haul flights and frequent climate changes. In countries where it is especially hot, such as the UAE and Kuwait, the instruments deteriorated. Wood is a living material that is prone to deformation. This changed the most important thing — the sound. The idea that you need to make your own instrument came to the USA. I took a chance and replaced the classic walnut wood with carbon fiber — a material that is not afraid of heat and moisture. It is certainly more expensive, but is a solution that has now been tested by time. I developed a unique three-layer frame to achieve the desired sound — there is an international patent confirming my copyright. In addition, the design of some parts is also special. I replaced the standard rings with the letters E F O, 9 on each side. From 2014 to the present day, 270 dhols have been made, and in any country, each of them invariably bears my name — Efo Khachatryan. This is especially important. There must be something meaningful with my name left in the world.

— Is there anything new in the line of drums? What work is going on in the Efo Dhol workshop now?

— In the work of a dhol made of wood processed using a special technology. The first samples have already found their owners.

This news aroused our interest and we found enthusiastic responses from happy owners of new dholes from Efo. They are designed in the usual style for him — the beauty is in the details!

— Our meeting in the studio is not accidental — reveal the secret of how it appeared and what you need to do to become a student of the Efo drum studio?

—  Efo drum studio started its work in 2013. I realized that there are guys who want to play like Efo and I decided to teach them how to do it well. If it is possible to convey interest in an ancient instrument and Armenian culture through my work, that’s great! Efo drum studio is located in the very center of Yerevan — it is the only one of its kind. Guys with a delicate musical ear are engaged here, they are given to feel the music. To become a student of this studio, the drum must be in the soul — there is no secret in this!

— Classes in the studio are held according to your author’s method?

— Yes, and it is based on a lot of work. As I said earlier, I studied at a music school and a conservatory in different departments, but it was not a dhol. Dhole was taught without musical notation. It is very important to explain and show children the intricacies of playing the dhol, but it is necessary to create a manual where notes will be used. This became possible with the support of my talented friends. In April 2021, the presentation of the first tutorial on playing the dhol “Դհոլի բանալի” (translated as “Key to the dhol”) was held. In this book, in addition to notes, measures, musical terms, there are modern technologies. The book can be felt through QR codes, but at the same time, you just need to hold it in your hands.

And then something happens that for a child in the Efo studio can be considered a real miracle! We really see genuine delight and interest in the eyes of the young drummer! He received the book «The Key to the Dhol» as a gift from the hands of Efo himself! Good wishes to the younger generation come from the heart. So Sergey Khachatryan passes on to his students not just invaluable knowledge accumulated over many years of work. He shows the way to become a great musician!

Our meeting was held in one breath — Especially the novice drummer does not want to leave, but it’s time to say goodbye. Thank you for the meeting and let’s go outside. The sky was covered with clouds. It’s raining in Yerevan. And we did not notice how the capricious weather switched from bright sunny to cloudy. The Efo studio is flooded with light, but not from the sun and lamps. It was simply created by a person who does his job right and proudly, this light is inside Efo.

As long as there are professionals in their field, such as Efo — Sergey Khachatryan, we are sure that the culture of Armenia is in good hands!

Музыка не просто живёт в душе, Efo и есть музыка!

В самом центре Еревана царит привычная суета рабочего дня – каждый занят повседневными делами и, что особенно заметно, повседневными мыслями. Офисное здание отдаёт холодом тёмного мрамора – спрятаться внутри от обеденного зноя — отличная мысль! Очень вежливый, но строгий мужчина на входе бережно хранит тишину.

— Вы в студию дхола Efo? – на лице прежде серьёзного человека появляется искренняя улыбка – «Вам на 6 этаж. Проходите!»

Efo знают все: в этом здании, в этом городе, да что уж говорить – во всём мире. Это он в 2008 аккомпанировал, а в 2011 году открывал Евровидение в Армении. В 2008 году с Заслуженным артистом Республики Армения певцом Арманом Ованисяном создал «Arman Hovhannisyan Production», вместе они объехали с гастрольным туром США, Европу, побывали в Австралии и Канаде. В 2015 году вышла в свет его авторская композиция «Շուշի/Հաղթանակ» («Шуши/Победа»), которая прозвучала на многих разножанровых концертах. В 2016 было положено начало яркого сотрудничества с Karen Sevak, которое продолжается по сей день. В 2022 году Еfo вместе с танцевальной студией «Swag dance» выпустил клип «Hay Fidayi». Efo дарит миру возможность увидеть культуру Армении в современном контексте, при этом сохраняя тесную связь с историей.

Поднимаемся на обыкновенном лифте, идём по обыкновенному коридору и подходим, кажется, к обыкновенной двери. За ней, как полагается в студии дхола, звучит барабан. Ждём буквально пару минут окончания занятия и входим в небольшую комнату, залитую светом. Нас встречает человек-легенда – Сергей Efo Хачатрян!

Знакомимся и начинаем разговор. Получилась тёплая встреча с человеком, который действительно живёт своим делом! С нами пришёл начинающий барабанщик 7 лет, его мечта – познакомится с Efo! И всё внимание в студии дхола Efo, в первую очередь, ученикам!

Главный разговор происходит между музыкантами, они понимают друг друга без слов, только ритм. Состоявшийся профессионал Efo так легко ведёт беседу, что от смущения юного барабанщика в момент не остаётся и следа. В этой студии с лёгкостью уживаются атмосфера свободного творчества и строгое следование академическим основам музыки, напряжённая работа разбавлена моментами искреннего смеха. Организовать процесс таким образом может только человек, который с самого детства не расстаётся с дхолом! Efo наверняка знает, каким должен быть процесс обучения — Сергей Хачатрян создал собственную систему, подробно описанную в книге «Դհոլի բանալի» («Ключ от дхола»). Но всё по порядку!

— Как встретились Efo и дхол? Когда Вы впервые взяли в руки барабан и как это произошло?

— В нашем доме всегда был дхол и впервые я взял его в руки в 5 лет. А правильно держать его научил мой папа – Арменак Хачатрян. В 6 лет он привёл меня в ансамбль «Զարդանախշեր» («Зарданахшер»), что в переводе звучит как «Орнаменты» в Центр эстетики в Ереване. В то время многим танцевальным коллективам аккомпанировали музыканты и меня сразу взяли. В 1993 году Генрих Игитян включил меня в группу для участия в фестивале, который проходил в Санкт-Петербурге в Петропавловском дворце. Месяц я был вдали от дома и родных, со мной обращались очень бережно, будто это хрусталь. Чтобы я не скучал, мне подарили игрушку – зоопарк, это очень яркие детские воспоминания. С тех пор у меня остались видеозаписи, фотографии, вырезки из газет – и везде я неразлучен с дхолом. Я очень благодарен отцу за то, что он организовал съёмку и сохранил эти воспоминания. После моего возвращения он сказал, что мне необходимо учится музыке и мы пошли на прослушивание в музыкальную школу имени Армена Тиграняна.

— Так началось серьёзное обучение игре на дхоле?

— Так началось серьёзное обучение музыке! Я был принят на отделение фортепиано, потому что отделения дхола просто не было.

— На каких инструментах, помимо дхола, играет Efo и почему делом жизни стал именно дхол?

— После фортепиано я продолжил обучение на армянском духовом инструменте – шви. Окончив школу, поступил в Ереванскую государственную консерваторию имени Комитаса по классу народных инструментов на отделение сантура, игре на дхоле в то время не обучали. Однако, всё это время я участвовал в многочисленных фестивалях в Армении и за её пределами и неизменно в моих руках был дхол.

— Как родилась идея создания дхола по собственной технологии и чем уникален барабан от Efo?

— Идея создания Efo Dhol – результат поиска практического решения. Выступления в Аргентине, Уругвае, Бразилии, Канаде предполагали дальние перелёты и частую смену климата. В странах, где особенно жарко, например, в ОАЭ и Кувейте, инструменты портились. Дерево – живой материал, склонный к деформации. От этого менялось самое главное — звук. Мысль о том, что нужно делать свой инструмент пришла в США. Я рискнул и заменил классическую ореховую древесину на карбон – материал, который не боится тепла и влаги. Он, безусловно, дороже, но является решением, теперь уже проверенным временем. Я разработал уникальный трёхслойный каркас, чтобы добиться необходимого звучания – существует международный патент, подтверждающий мои авторские права. Кроме того, дизайн некоторых деталей тоже особенный. Я заменил стандартные кольца на буквы E F O по 9 на каждой стороне. С 2014 года по сегодняшний день изготовлено 270 дхолов и в любой стране на каждом из них неизменно написано моё имя — Efo Khachatryan. Это особенно важно. В мире должно остаться что-то значимое с моим именем.

— Есть ли что-то новое в линейке барабанов? Какая работа сейчас идёт в мастерской Efo Dhol?

— В работе дхол из дерева, обработанного по специальной технологии. Первые образцы уже нашли своих владельцев.

Эта новость вызвала у нас интерес и мы обнаружили восторженные отклики счастливых обладателей новых дхолов от Efo. Они выдержаны в привычном для него стиле – красота в мелочах!

— Наша встреча в студии не случайна – откройте секрет, как она появилась и что нужно делать, чтобы стать учеником студии дхола Efo?

— Студия дхола Efo начала свою работу в 2013 году. Я понял, что есть ребята, которые хотят играть, как Efo, и решил научить их делать это хорошо. Если получается через моё творчество передать интерес к старинному инструменту и армянской культуре — это здорово! Студия дхола Efo находится в самом центре Еревана – она единственная в своём роде. Здесь занимаются ребята с тонким музыкальным слухом, им дано чувствовать музыку. Чтобы стать учеником этой студии, барабан должен быть в душе – в этом нет секрета!

— Занятия в студии проходят по Вашей авторской методике?

— Да и в основе её лежит большая работа. Как я уже говорил ранее, я обучался в музыкальной школе и консерватории на разных отделениях, но это был не дхол. Игра на дхоле преподавалась без нотной записи. Объяснять и показывать детям тонкости игры на дхоле очень важно, но необходимо создать пособие, где будут использоваться ноты. Это стало возможным при поддержке моих талантливых друзей. В апреле 2021 года прошла презентация первого учебного пособия по игре на дхоле «Դհոլի բանալի» (в переводе — «Ключ от дхола»). В этой книге помимо нот, тактов, музыкальных терминов присутствуют современные технологии. Книгу можно почувствовать через QR-коды, но при этом, просто необходимо держать её в руках.

А дальше происходит то, что для ребёнка в студии Efo может считаться настоящим чудом! Мы на деле видим неподдельный восторг и интерес в глазах пока ещё не очень взрослого барабанщика! Он получил книгу «Ключ от дхола» в подарок из рук самого Efo! Добрые пожелания подрастающему поколению идут от души. Так Сергей Хачатрян передаёт своим ученикам не просто бесценные знания, собранные за долгие годы работы. Он показывает путь, следуя которым можно стать великим музыкантом!
Наша встреча прошла на одном дыхании – особенно не хочет уходить начинающий барабанщик, но приходит время прощаться. Благодарим за встречу и выходим на улицу. Небо затянули тучи. В Ереване дождь. А мы и не заметили, как капризная погода с яркой солнечной переключилась на пасмурную. Студия Efo залита светом, но не от солнца и светильников. Просто создал её человек, который делает своё дело правильно и гордо, этот свет у Efo внутри.
